The flexi desk in Dubai free zones and the Flexi Desk in ADGM are not the same product. In many Dubai free zones a flexi desk comes bundled with the licence and counts as the company's office; in ADGM, a company must keep a physical office address inside ADGM at all times, and at Aegis Coworking that means a Dedicated Desk or a Private Office, not a Flexi Desk.
The difference matters most to founders who set up in Dubai first, or who compare free zones on price. A "flexi desk" quoted in Dubai and a Flexi Desk in ADGM can share a name and still do very different jobs. This guide explains what each one is, how a few Dubai free zones describe theirs, and which one you actually need.
What does "flexi desk" mean in UAE free zones?
In everyday coworking language, a flexi desk is a shared seat you use without being tied to one workstation. Other names for it include hot desk and smart desk.
In UAE free zones the term often means something more specific: the smallest office arrangement a free zone accepts alongside a company licence. That second meaning is where the confusion starts, because whether a flexi desk counts as a company's office depends entirely on the free zone's own rules.
How do Dubai free zone flexi desks work?
Each free zone sets its own terms, so the details below come from the free zones' own descriptions. Always confirm the current terms with the free zone before you commit.
- Meydan Free Zone says every business licence it issues includes a flexi desk office, and that this flexi desk fulfils the office address requirement, including Ejari or equivalent lease documentation. In other words, the desk comes with the licence. Meydan Free Zone's flexi desk guide
- IFZA lists two desk options: a Flexi Desk with a shared workstation for 10 hours a week, an IFZA address and one hour of meeting room use a month; and a Flexi Desk+ with unlimited access to a dedicated desk, an individual address and five hours of meeting room use a month. IFZA's office options
- DMCC offers premises ranging from a flexi desk to fitted offices in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. Which option supports your licence and visa quota is a question to put to DMCC directly.
The pattern across Dubai free zones is that the flexi desk is designed around the licence. It is the entry-level office package, and in some free zones it is included as standard.
How is ADGM different?
ADGM does not bundle a desk with the licence. Its setting-up guidance says a company must maintain a physical office address in ADGM at all times, and must show evidence of confirmed office space through an executed Lease Agreement or Membership Agreement. ADGM setting-up FAQs
That office has to sit inside ADGM's jurisdiction, which covers Al Maryah Island and, since 2023, Al Reem Island. The lease is then registered on ADGM's AccessRP platform, and the Certificate of Registration of Lease is needed again at every licence renewal.
For one licence type ADGM is explicit about shared seating: Tech Startup licence holders must have at least one dedicated desk or office space, and a hot desk is not accepted. We cover that rule in detail in which desk an ADGM Tech Startup licence needs.
Visas follow the same logic. At a business centre address, ADGM allocates 2 employee visas per desk for standard activities and 3 for innovation activities, so the desk on your lease also sets how many people you can sponsor. The full table is in our guide to visas per desk in ADGM.

What does a Flexi Desk at Aegis give you?
At Aegis Coworking in Addax Tower, the Flexi Desk is a shared seat on the coworking floor with fibre internet, meeting room credits, community events, and coffee and tea. It is built for people who want a professional place to work in Abu Dhabi without needing an ADGM licence address.
That makes it a good fit for:
- A Dubai free zone company whose founder or team member is based in Abu Dhabi and needs somewhere to work
- Remote employees of companies registered outside the UAE
- Freelancers and consultants licensed elsewhere
If your company is, or will be, licensed in ADGM, the Dedicated Desk is the plan that includes the licence address. You can see both options on our flexi desk in ADGM page, and current rates are on the pricing page.
Which one do you need?
- Your company is licensed in a Dubai free zone and you want a desk in Abu Dhabi: a Flexi Desk at Aegis covers it. Your Dubai licence and its office arrangement stay as they are.
- You are setting up a company in ADGM: start with a Dedicated Desk, which gives you the office address and a membership agreement that ADGM accepts as evidence.
- You are applying for a Tech Startup licence: a Dedicated Desk or office is the minimum.
- You plan to hire: count the visas you need first, then the desks, because visas are allocated per desk.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Dubai free zone flexi desk serve as an ADGM company's office?
No. An ADGM company must keep its physical office address inside ADGM, so a desk in a Dubai free zone cannot be its registered office.
Is a hot desk the same as a flexi desk?
In everyday coworking language, yes: both mean a shared seat that isn't assigned to you. The difference is whether a free zone accepts that seat as the company's office, which varies by free zone.
Does a Flexi Desk at Aegis come with visas?
No. At Aegis the Flexi Desk is not a licence address, so it carries no visa allocation. Visas come with the Dedicated Desk or Private Office your ADGM company is registered to.
Can I upgrade from a Flexi Desk to a Dedicated Desk later?
Yes. Both are in the same business centre on the 38th floor of Addax Tower, so you can move to a Dedicated Desk when your company needs an ADGM licence address.
